Yahoo Search Gets Social, internetnews.com, 29 June 2005

“My Web 1.0, released in April, lets those signed in with a Yahoo account save pages to a "personal Web," rate pages and block them from ever appearing again in search results. The new version extends these abilities to a trusted community. Users first must set up their communities, or social networks, by inviting others to join. They can use e-mail or import contacts from the Yahoo Address Book, Messenger buddy list or Yahoo 360 community.”

Antispam proposals advance, CnetNews.com, 29 June 2005

“An Internet standards group approved two "experimental" antispam proposals, sidestepping a controversy dividing Microsoft and its e-mail competitors. The experimental Requests for Comment (RFCs)--Sender Policy Framework (SPF) for Authorizing Use of Domains in E-Mail and Sender ID: Authenticating E-Mail--have been the subject of intense jockeying by Microsoft, America Online and others. Critics have accused Microsoft of trying to strong-arm the industry into accepting Sender ID. Concerns over Microsoft's Sender ID-related patents have alarmed some involved in setting standards, and last year the IETF let a Sender ID working group expire.”

Hollywood wins Internet piracy battle, CNN Money, 27 June 2005

“In MGM v. Grokster, the high court overturned a ruling that had barred Hollywood and the music industry from suing Internet services used by consumers to swap songs and movies for free. In Grokster, the court did not address the question of whether the technology at issue in the case -- known as file-sharing, or "peer-to-peer" -- is illegal. Rather, the justices focused on the actions of the peer-to-peer software companies named in the case, Grokster Ltd. and StreamCast Networks Inc., the maker of file-sharing software known as Morpheus, and whether they encouraged the illegal use of their technology.”

Key US file-sharing ruling looms, BBC News, 27 June 2005

“The US Supreme Court is deciding if the software firms can be blamed when their creations are used to break the law. The case was brought by 28 media makers who claim the main use of file-sharing networks is to help people illegally swap copyrighted material. Technology experts fear that if the Supreme Court justices decide in favour of the movie and music makers it could stifle innovation as all new technologies will have to have potential infringing uses designed out.”

Viruses, Security Issues Undermine Internet, 26 June 2005

“Hackers, viruses, worms, spam, spyware and phishing sites have proliferated to the point where it's nearly impossible for most computer users to go online without falling victim to them. Last year, the Carnegie Mellon University logged 3,780 new computer security vulnerabilities, compared with 1,090 in 2000 and 171 in 1995. Computer security firm Symantec Corp. over the past decade has catalogued 11,000 vulnerabilities in 20,000 technologies, affecting 2,000 vendors. Now a movement is gathering steam to upgrade the network, to create an Internet 2.0. Internet2, a consortium of mostly academic institutions that has built a screaming-fast network separate from the public Internet, is testing a technology that allows users to identify themselves as belonging to some sort of group.”
