“At the start of last year, Bill Gates told the world’s elite at an annual conference in Davos, Switzerland, that the problem of spam would be solved in 2 years. But if the Microsoft chairman was betting on Sender ID to play a major role in achieving that goal, it looks like a losing bet. The Microsoft-backed protocol to identify email senders aims to stem spam and phishing by making it harder for senders to forge their addresses and by improving filtering. So far, though, there’s been a lack of adoption by legitimate businesses. Instead, it’s been proving popular with a group it’s meant to deter-spammers.”

One in six Americans visiting blogs, cNet News, August 9, 2005

“A new report out by a leading Internet research company has revealed that fully 30 percent of American Internet users visited blogs during the first quarter of 2005. According to the report, Behaviors of the Blogosphere, from comScore Networks, almost 50 million-or one in six-Americans spent at least some time on blogs during that time frame. That’s a 45 percent rise over the year before.”

Google buys IM company? CNet News, August 9, 2005

“Instant chat has long been on the list of inevitable Google applications. But it may move quickly to the top of the list. Google has reportedly agreed to buy upstart software maker Meetroduction, based in Chicago. The company’s premiere service, Meetro, lets people find one another online within a local radius of a quarter of a mile, or from across the Atlantic; and then chat instantly with those strangers or friends. Meetro’s free, downloadable software also doubles as a social-networking application, allowing people to add profiles of themselves and stake out the personal details of other conversationalists.”

Vector Capital Agrees To Buy Register.com, Wall Street Journal Online News, August 9, 2005

“Register.com Inc. said it has agreed to be acquired by Vector Capital, a private equity firm, in a deal worth about $200 million. Under the terms of agreement, Register stockholders will receive $7.81 in cash for each share of common stock. Register shares rose 10 cents to $7.75 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.”
