Vodafone Signs Up 4.1M Users in 1Q, Yahoo.com, 25 July 2005

“Vodafone Group PLC signed up 4.1 million users in the first quarter of this financial year, ahead of forecasts and up 35 percent on a year ago. The company said that customer growth helped drive internal revenue growth of 8.6 percent during the quarter to June 30, leading the company to reiterate its full-year guidance for revenue growth of between 6 percent and 9 percent. It also added 1.1 million third generation, or 3G, phones during the quarter, taking the total to 3.3 million.”

“Vodafone signed up 1.1 million new 3G users in the quarter, taking total registered 3G users to 3.3 million. Although Vodafone Japan recorded 5,000 net new customers in the month of June, it posted a loss of 72,000 over the quarter.
In the UK, Vodafone added a net 165,000 customers in the quarter, giving it 15.5 million users. Average revenue per user (ARPU) dipped to £300 for the year to June from £306 for the year to March, mainly because of regulatory price cuts in termination rates.”

Attackers lurk on photo sites, firm warns, CnetNews, 25 July 2005

“The free services are an anonymous and affordable way for attackers to store and spread their malicious code. In April, Websense reported that blogging services were being targeted by cybercriminals. The company is now warning that other services that offer free Web space--for example, photo album sites, fan sites or greeting card sites--are also being exploited. The attackers typically lure people to the malicious sites by sending enticing e-mails and instant messages. When a victim clicks on a link, the computer becomes infected.”

“Motorola Inc. unveiled on Monday an ultra thin mobile phone with a keyboard, aimed at people who have become addicted to Blackberry e-mail and messaging devices. Motorola also laid out plans for a phone that could swap from a wide-area cellular network to WiFi in a consumer's home.”

Yahoo! acquires Konfabulator, Yahoo.com, 25 July 2005

“Yahoo! said the reason they purchased Konfabulator was that they wanted an easy way to open up its APIs to the developer community and allow them easy access to the information on the Yahoo! Web site. In doing this, Widgets could be built without having to scrape sites in order to get information.”

Yahoo Turns to Software Widgets, NewsFactorNetwork, 25 July 2005

“Yahoo said its goal is to encourage user experimentation and develop unique ways to view its Web site information. While the company will provide access to the widgets for free, Yahoo expects the software will generate more interest in its services and help the company expand its advertising base. Although Yahoo is purchasing the Konfabulator software, the Web portal will not inject advertising.”
