Telefonica Moviles Espana Selects Openwave Messageing Suite to Offer Consumer and Corporate customers a Singel Inbox for all Messaging Services, Openwave.com, 13 July 2005

“By selecting Openwave's integrated messaging platform, Telefónica Móviles will be able to launch new communication services such as "always on" Email, allowing users to receive emails to their current mobile devices, as they would to their PC, and previously only available on sophisticated, expensive mobile devices. In addition, Telefónica Móviles will mobilize a variety of email accounts being offered by ISPs as well as enterprise e-mail accounts, allowing end-users to have their preferred e-mail account in their phones without changing their selected e-mail provider.”

Speakers at E-Mail Summit Push Authentication, Reputation Tools, eWeek, 13 July 13

“Representatives from 37 e-mail technology companies used a one-day Summit in New York on Tuesday to exhort private sector administrators and online marketers to adopt e-mail sender authentication technology that helps block spam and phishing attacks. Attendees were treated to in-depth discussions of technologies such as the open source SPF (Sender Policy Framework, Microsoft's SIDF (Sender ID Framework) and the new DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail).”

“Many of the speakers hit the same points, hoping to drive home the urgency of the situation: (1) Email authentication technology is available and must be deployed as soon as possible to pave the way for reputation-based security. (2) Authentication isn't enough by itself, though, as spammers were among the earliest adopters of certification and a certificate of authenticity doesn't say anything about the validity of the message content. (3) Spoofed emails are a serious drain on customer relations, and marketers must support strong enforcement of cyber laws to protect their customers and their own companies. (5)Email messages must be relevant and targeted to specific customer needs in order to stay out of the junk folder.”

E-Mail Users Losing Money to Online Scams, Yahoo.com, 13 July 2005
“Nine percent of U.S. Internet users have lost money on e-mail scams, according to a survey of 791 users conducted by market research firm The Radicati Group. According to Ferris Research's estimates based on mathematical models, the worldwide cost of e-mail spam and scams in the world is $50 billion a year, and $17 billion a year in the U.S. alone.”

“Gregor Freund, chief exec and co-founder of the Check Point Software subsidiary, said RSS feeds are a potential threat because whenever you have unstructured or unfiltered data you can end up with viruses. He added that Zone Labs had spotted malicious behaviour over RSS feeds but wasn't able to supply any details on what this malfeasance might be.”

VoIP Still Lags Behind in Quality, Survey says, InfoWorld.com, 13 July 2005

“Keynote Systems tested the services for reliability and quality by making domestic long-distance and local calls from VoIP services to the PSTN (public switched telephone network) in May and June this year. Call quality was evaluated by software and used an industry standard for listening quality, according to Dharmesh Thakker, senior product manager at Keynote..”
