IBM to add blogging tools to Workplace, InfoWorld, 12 July 2005

“Version 2.5 of Workplace will ship with a Weblog component that allows users to create blogs with features such as archiving, permalinks, comments, search, and syndication, according to IBM officials. The Weblog tool preview also offers enterprise-level features including security, roles, application templates, and a single point of administration for blogs and other Workplace components. Another feature, dubbed blogroll, allows bloggers to show a public list of favorite internal and external Weblog.”

Survey Finds Spam Now Hits Your Wallet, Mirapoint, 12 July 2005

“Mirapoint and Radicati Group produced a report focused on email security and usage to identify the existing trends allowing spammers to continue to mislead consumers. The survey found that 11 percent of users purchase products and services from spam emails and 9 percent of users have lost money due to an email scam. Even if they aren’t buying products, 39 percent of users admit to clicking on embedded links within spam (other than the unsubscribe link). Furthermore, 57 percent of respondents that click on spam links say they receive more spam.”

Tumbleweed Teams with Commtouch to Add Outbreak Detection to Tumbleweed MailGate; Security Company Licenses RPD Technology from Commtouch, Expands Spam Prevention Capabilities, Commtouch, 11 July 2005

Skype and Boingo announce VOIP Wi-Fi partnership, InfoWorld, 12 July 2005

“Skype Zones offer VOIP users unlimited access to Boingo's public broadband for $7.95 per month. Also, infrequent users can pay $2.95 for a two hour connection. Luxembourg-based Skype International's existing offers will remain, Larabee added. As of now the company gives users the ability to make free calls to other Skype users over the Internet and also allows its customers to make VOIP calls to traditional fixed line and mobile networks at significantly reduced rates. The VOIP industry is young but growing rapidly -- Skype claimed that as of June 22 its 43 million user base is growing by 140,000 users a day.”

Boingo Adds VOIP-Only Access Plan With Skype Deal, ExtremeTech, 12 July 2005

“The deal will allow users to download a special Skype service, called Skype Zones, which is currently in beta. The deal effectively adds another tier of pricing to Boingo's service agreement, one specifically designed for users who want to duck in to make a quick VOIP call. Boingo charges $21.95 per month for unlimited Internet access, which includes surfing the Web and other functions. Although users can not access the Internet, they can use the Skype Zones service to access their contact lists, directory and write instant messages with the Skype software.”

Sprint PCS Business Connection(SM) Wireless Email Service Now Available on JAVA-Enabled Devices, Yahoo! Finance, 12 July 2005

“Sprint and SEVEN today announced the availability of Sprint PCS Business Connection on select Sprint JAVA-enabled multimedia devices. This latest enhancement gives Sprint customers the convenience of accessing real-time corporate and personal email and contacts via a feature-rich JAVA client. Sprint Business Connection provides real-time access to Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, POP and IMAP information -- including email messages and attachments, calendars, business directories and personal contacts, desktop documents, and personal email from Internet email accounts including Sprint PCS Mail, Yahoo!, Earthlink and others.”
