1. Rumor Mill: Google to launch WiFi, VPN service
According to reports circulating the Internet, Google plans to launch free WiFi hotspots that have more security than hotspots currently found in public settings. A VPN is offered as a free download on Google's website, but the service is not yet activated. Google has declined to comment on the rumors, but the company's Web site says that one of its engineers developed a solution to the lack of security at WiFi hotspots called Google Secure Access.

2. Trend: Microsoft, AOL announce VoIP services
Microsoft, AOL, and Motorola each plan to launch VoIP services in the coming months. AOL's TotalTalk service launches October 4th. The company expects subscribers to TotalTalk to save up to 40 percent on phone bills. Microsoft is teaming up with Qwest Communications for its VoIP offering aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. Microsoft bought VoIP developer Teleo last month and expects to launch its new VoIP service in early 2006. Motorola is providing its broadband infrastructure to VoIP service provider Sonus, a move that demonstrates one path for convergence of the technology into major carriers' portfolios.

3. Cisco Elbows For SMB Web Conferencing
Cisco Systems (Quote, Chart) has licensed Macromedia's Flash technology for a Web conferencing offering in the making, officials announced today.
Cisco said it would use Macromedia's Breeze and Flash platforms in order to deliver a comprehensive Web and audio conferencing offering for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMB).

8. GoogleNet flickers into life
Five months after announcing its first Google-branded hot spots, covering San Francisco's Union Square and main public library, Google is enhancing the service. The ad giant briefly made a beta of a proxy server, Google Secure Access, available for limited download today before withdrawing the link.
