Fake Bin Laden e-mail hides virus, BBC News, 3 June 2005

“The messages claim to contain pictures of the al-Qaeda leader's arrest but anyone opening the attachment will fall victim to a Microsoft Windows virus. The vulnerability exploited by Psyme is found in Windows 2000, 95, 98, ME, NT, XP and Windows Server 2003. Users were urged to update their version of Windows to close the loophole.”

All versions of the message announced that the al-Qaida leader had been seized and included an attachment called "pics" that, when opened, attempted to download a worm to the victim's PC. This is not the first time Osama bin Laden's name has been used in an attempt to trick users to open a malicious file.”

“The number of credit unions in phishing e-mails has been growing over the past months. The total rose from three in February to 21 in May. In April, the number of phishing attempts reported to the Anti-Phishing Working Group rose to 14,411, continuing a trend of slight monthly growth this year. However, a small drop in unique phishing e-mails was reported, down to 3,930, from 4,100 in March.”

“The number of US residential VoIP subscribers in the US will reach over 4.1 million in 2005, up from 150,000 at the end of 2003. As of March 2005, the number stood at 2 million, meaning that growth will be great enough to double that figure by the end of the year. Revenues for 2005 will total over $1 billion.”
