Yahoo wants more mashups.
The Web giant on Wednesday released Yahoo Pipes, a hosted visual-development tool that lets people manipulate data feeds from Web sites to create new applications.
Mashup applications combine data from different Web services; some of the most popular mashups involve taking data from one source, such as real-estate listings, and displaying them on Web-based mapping services.

Nokia will give away mapping software to its customers as well as users of Window Mobile devices. Mobile users can download the Smart2go maps that cover 150 countries and include 15 million points of interest, such as restaurants and accommodation. Users can store the map data on a memory card in the handset. The data can be downloaded over the air or via a connection to a PC.

A Microsoft spokesperson has told eWEEK that the company will show its new version of Windows Mobile to the world on Feb. 12 at the 3GSM trade show in Barcelona, Spain.
The new version, Windows Mobile 6, is an upgrade to the popular Windows Mobile 5, now widely used in smart phones, PDAs and some cell phones. The new version adds a number of capabilities not present, or in some cases incomplete, in the earlier version.

With reportedly tens of millions of users, Gmail still lags far behind Web e-mail giants Microsoft and Yahoo. One reason may be that, until now, users could obtain a Gmail account by invitation only. Though finding an invitation is no longer difficult, Google has promised to soon drop the invitation-only requirement in North America.
