3. Google opens up instant messaging

Google Talk users can now talk to people using other instant messaging systems that support the XMPP open communications protocol. Those systems include Jabber.org, Earthlink, Sipphone's Gizmo Project, Chikka in the Philippines, MediaRing in Singapore, Tiscali in Italy and China's Netease, Google said in a statement.

4. Google Talk Opens Up

Google Talk is now speaking to other Jabber servers, nearly six months after the company released the instant messaging application. Open federation is now part of Google Talk, meaning the software can communicate eith other Jabber-based instant messaging clients, according to Google's developer FAQ.

Flaws in Cisco Systems software for routers and IP telephony could be a conduit for attacks on enterprise networks, the company has warned. On Wednesday, it released two security alerts along with fixes for Cisco CallManager, which runs Internet-based phone calling.
