Sales of VoWLAN phones averaged about 100,000 to 150,000 units in 2004, according to research organizations Infonetics and Synergy Research Group, and far fewer dual-mode phones were sold. Unit sales projections for 2009 come in at around 17 million for pure VoWLAN phones, with predictions for dual-mode handset sales ranging from 30 million to 100 million.

2. Spyware, IM Security Targeted
CheckPoint Software Technologies Ltd. is adding integrated anti-spyware and Instant Message security functions to Release 6.5 of its Integrity end point security suite. Integrity is used with the client platforms based on ZoneAlarm software. The initial Windows platform will be followed by Novell Linux desktop versions.

4. Anti-Spyware Becomes Windows Defender
Microsoft's anti-spyware application is getting a new name and a new delivery channel. Windows AntiSpyware, which has been in beta since January, is now called Windows Defender. The application will also be part of the upcoming Windows Vista OS.

5. AOL preps LLU broadband launch
AOL could be about to unveil its own broadband service in the UK by investing in local loop unbundling (LLU), The Register has learned. The ISP - which has more than a million broadband users - has just kicked off a small trial in London to test its broadband service. It's also just placed its first orders with BT to unbundle exchanges.

7. Internet phone customers may get cut off-coalition
Roughly 750,000 of the estimated 2.5 million Internet telephone customers may have service turned off because providers cannot offer enhanced 911 service, according to a survey on Monday by Voice On the Net Coalition.
